Success Stories - Digitize with a Human Touch

Jerome is the 3rd generation in his family fishball business. Moving over from a totally unrelated industry, he has made a brave decision to help his dad innovate the business further, with the vision of passing the 100th Anniversary mark in years to come.

Mr. Lim Gek Meng, Jerome’s father took over the stall in 1975 with only one stall in Singapore, In order to keep his fishball standard, Mr. Lim decided to set up their own factory in the year 1994, and started his first eating house in Upper Thomson in 2004.

Today, succession problems loom large, threatening the future of Singapore’s much-loved hawker fare. If youths aren’t willing, who will take up the mantle after veteran hawkers hang up their woks? With the inscription of the UNESCO, it is very encouraging that Jerome willing to work with his father to further expand the physical stalls, as well as digitize their business model.

Firstly, upon joining the operation, Jerome has successfully expanded the business to Jakarta and the Philippines, with a slightly different vision from his dad. His vision is to slowly expand the business globally. To cater to the local market especially during the COVID period, he has created an e-commerce site, to cope with the Circuit Breaker as well as the long closure of the stalls, in order to keep the business going. This new e-commerce concept not only increases the business by 10%, but it has also reached a wider group of target audiences.

The challenges he faced are, to cope with the new influx of orders, and getting enough good workers to assist in the production line. The staff has been changing constantly, thus affecting the culture of the production line. As the borders are closed, he is also unable to find more new staff to cope with the increasing orders. With the shortage of manpower, Jerome has adopted an e-payment system, so to free his staff to operate other functions to smoothen the operations, especially when dining-in was allowed after the Circuit Breaker period.

With the digitizing of his business, as well as incentives schemes to encourage his staff to stay, he is able to turn around the business in the new norm.
