About Event

Organised since 2021 to better guide heartland business owners on your innovation journey, the Heartland Innovation Challenge brings together heartland enterprises and tertiary students from institutes of higher learning to co-create new products/ services, develop new sales channels, and create fresh business formats.

As part of the structured innovation process, heartland enterprises will be guided by industry experts to refine problem statements and learn about relevant trends and industry developments to scope possible solutions. The participating companies will also be matched with dedicated student teams to co-create viable solutions, build low-fidelity prototypes and develop go-to-market strategies and business proposals.

Who will you work with?

A team of 3 to 4 third-year students specialising in Interaction Design and Experiential Product & Interior Design, guided by experienced Nanyang Polytechnic lecturers.

What do you need to commit?
  • Assign 1 company representative with decision making authority
  • Active participation and be contact points for students and lecturers
  • Participate in Problem Statement Refinement Workshop (2 half-days), Co-creation Process and Final Pitch (14 or 15 Aug)
  • Online or offline engagement sessions with the student team over the 4 months period
  • Plan for resources to adopt a potential solution; specify your intended budget for transformation
  • $1,000 participation fee per company
What’s in the Participation Package?
  • Design Thinking and Problem Statement Refinement Workshop (2 half-days) for 1 company representatives.
  • 1-on-1 consultation with experienced trainer on company’s problem statement
  • Dedicated tertiary student team to develop an omni-channel solution to the problem statement using design thinking methodologies
  • Access to strategic industry workshops and talks by industry experts, veterans and thought leaders to elevate business acumen and sharpen problem-solving skills
  • Potential media coverage for winning teams
  • Full rights to use the proposals and assets created as part of the challenge:
    • A Business Proposal tackling the problem statement
    • A Visual Merchandising proposal for physical shop
    • An eCommerce/Online Presence proposal
    • A set of Digital Marketing Assets (i.e. videos/ images/ copywriting etc.)
    • Market-tested prototype and/or proof of concept of solution, where relevant
    • Technical documentation of solutions or assets created during the challenge

Workshop Info

Date: 8 (Mon) & 11 (Thu) April
Time: 9am – 12.30pm
Venue: Nanyang Polytechnic

Using design thinking methodologies, you will be guided to identify and discover opportunities for innovation within your business. Learn how to see the problem from the perspectives of your internal or external end-users, sharpen your problem statement and understand the steps required to co-develop creative solutions together with your student team.

This workshop is exclusive for representatives of participating companies, and a good networking opportunity for heartland businesses across different trades. Following the workshop, you will have a 1-hour one-on-one consultation with the trainers. This consultation session can be done in-person or virtually.

 

Timeline of Programme

Evaluated by a panel comprising professionals from both the public and private sectors, the solutions crafted for participating companies may serve as a proposal for potential grant support, such as the Enterprise Development Grant. All participating companies are encouraged to leverage the developed proposals and prototypes for commercialisation.
